Who’s Next

The Who

What could really be said about a band with Daltrey & Townsend in it. Over the years I have grown to love the The Who. This album is awash with some classics but the one that really stands out for me is Baba O’Riley the synth-driven masterpiece. I have also liked a couple of solo songs that Daltrey (After the Fire) and Townsend (Face to Face) have produced after their Who days. I have also been intrigued over the years about Peter Moon their drummer especially how he joined the band, not to mention his antics and how talented he was truly was. The rock opera of bands, the musical genius of The Who will live on long in to the future and it will be with further interest to see how many of their songs get covered into the future, there already has been so many which is probably the ultimate respect given to them.

Won’t get fooled again

We Two Are One

Eurythmics

Another artist marriage made in music heaven, the voice of Lennox and the musical genius of Stewart all wrapped up in one. Over the years they have produced so many great songs and albums from the power ballads to the pop anthems of a generation for over 3 decades.

They dared to be different both in a physical and musical presence and produced so many hits in the 80’s that made it difficult to choose which album I actually liked the most. Yet this album stood out the most for me perhaps the most mature sounding album they did – or maybe I just grew up still debating which one. We Two Are One definitely one of my favourite songs they produced but hey they had me at hello way back in 81…

The Seldom Seem Kid

Elbow

This band is so underrated in my eyes – they are true musicians with every member being a master of their chosen tool. Throw in the talent of Garvey and his voice it makes for great methodological sounding music. Most music I discover myself but this band was introduced to me by a fellow Englishmen to the band who was a lot older than me but loved his music all the same. This album has all the trimmings from Trumpets, Violins, Chellos, Pianos to a Guitar belting out a raw dirty sounding rift (Grounds for Divorce) but somehow it all just works, a uniqueness to this band that they own.

Making Mirrors

Gotye

Hard to believe that old Wally recorded probably the song of the millennium in the “world” in a make shift studio in a garage in his parents’ home in little old Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne. Somebody That I Used Know resinated with everyone across the world, the ultimate break up song – another argument that music is a language of its own it speaks to everyone no matter the race, colour or language. The song won so many awards across the world and rightfully so but I think the album was much more to Pidgeon hole it to one song. I believed that Gotye was the next Peter Gabriel (I draw a lot of similarities between them both) that the world was crying out for seemingly I was wrong. Still I admire the fact he explored a new musical territory at the time even making some of his own instruments to record different sounds across the album. I still hope he hasn’t finished but to back it up after this album the musical Gods will have to once again shine over him….

Boys & Girls

Bryan Ferry

Loved him in Roxy Music but it was this solo album that grabbed me the most maybe because it has in my opinion the greatest love song ever written on it (Standing beside U2 With or Without You & In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel). I recently discovered a cover version in which he has recently recorded of Johnny & Mary – there is just something about Ferry’s voice, also great to see he is still recording albeit a cover – does it really matter if they make it their own? I almost feel I am doing an injustice of not writing enough about this album but I will let the song “Slave to Love” do the talking – listen to it and make your own judgement.
