86 | Breakfast in America | Supertramp | Another multiply vocalist group – In Davies and Hodgson I could make reference to McCartney and Lennon a match made in music heaven. Also, a band that I didn’t really understand until I was old enough to understand the complexity of their songs. The Logical Song a song with nothing but intellect in which I believe Hodgson wrote about his life growing up. To me a very powerful song that could hold as much impact and recourse about the educational system as The Brick in the Wall does by Pink Floyd. Still this album is so much more than this song – another great nostalgic album | Take the long way home

87 | A New World Record | ELO – Electric Light Orchestra | A couple of lead vocalists, multiply musicians, throw in an orchestra and you have the perfect band? ELO in my opinion were ahead of their time in some ways especially the electronica sound. They consistently wrote some great music over the years and another older band I hold in high regard. To answer the first question, they made it work and work well. A modern day electronic symphony backed by powerful songs. Defiantly I stand and say that perhaps not a cool band to love I have no doubt their influence has paved way for modern day artists. | Above the Clouds

88 | Hey You Yes You | Ben Lee | Triple J have discovered a lot of great artists over the years, Lee being one of them. Cigarettes Will Kill You was a great song and charted well both commercially and alternatively, finishing #2 in Triple Js top 100 in 2001. But like all discoveries they soon move on to bigger and greater things from the Js which whist thankful for it (the airplay) it does bring me discontent that they would perhaps never have been discovered without Triple J or maybe this is why I appreciate Triple J more is what I am trying to say. All the great artists have a difference about them which I think has prohibited Lee somewhat, he is very alternative (perhaps even precocious) and maybe misunderstood a tiny bit, certainly egotistical which over the years has drawn me away from his music. Going from Jewish to Hindu you have to be different. But take nothing away from his avant-garde, nonconformist music this is a great album. | Running with Scissors

89 | Stones | Neil Diamond | I nearly cheated on this and entered Hot August Nights which is a great album but collectively a Greatest Hits. Neil Diamond a voice of my parents’ generation but an artist of eternity. Had the full package, played a guitar, sang and wrote but what’s more wrote songs with passion, some absolute classic songs over the years. Full appreciation of him and his music. | Stones

90 | Futuresex / Lovesounds | Justin Timberlake | Having kids who share the same passion for music I do has kept me somewhat young over the years and continues to do so. When Timberlake first come out (left the boy band!!) I honestly believed he would be the next Michael Jackson, could dance and sing. Realistically the world will never allow another Jackson, I don’t have enough or room in this column to qualify my statement, but think about it. Still this kid is talented and one of the more modern artists I have gravitated to over the years. What Goes Around, Comes Around a song about betrayal and forgiveness without the forgiveness, also a great film clip…. | Sexyback

100-90
Another five into the top 100 and the harder it became picking them. I found it a very restrictive experience especially towards the end. Just when I thought I had the 100 finalised I would think of another Album, then in with one and out with another……

91 | Sunburn | Fuel | A band that could have been a lot bigger had they had their shit together. I see they had over their time to now 14 band members in a 5-piece band including 2 different lead singers, wow. Still I thought when Brett Scallions left they didn’t really recover even when he re-joined the band, certainly not enough to match this album but all in all this Album was great and deserves to be up there. | Bittersweet Shimmer
I have probably listened more to Shimmer over the years but I have to say my favourite on this album is undoubtedly …. Sunburn | 1998 |

92 | Duran Duran | Duran Duran |
“The beginning of the 80s” I didn’t really learn to appreciate Duran Duran until later in life. I didn’t and still don’t do the boy band thing but you must appreciate that these boys could actually play instruments not to mention I think the two Taylor boys were actually quite talented. A bit of controversy with this Album with the original film clip of Girls on Film being Rated R therefore banned in Australia, later a censored version was released. All timely given weeks later MTV was on our TV. I see the uncensored version is now often freely played. A great film clip and quite cleverly put together, as Molly would say if you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favour. |

93 | Stoosh | Skunk Anansie | When they first come out I thought Skin was Grace Jones reincarnated, difference though Skin could sing. I see their Genre is rated at hard rock which I think is a little unkind Skunk Anansie are a lot more than that – they had a ballad on the Cruel Intentions Soundtrack which I thought was underrated called “Secretly” then you throw in Hedonism, another ballad, more than rock. Refreshing at the time (back half of the 90s) with the unique voice of Skin backed with a unique sound. | Hedonism

94 | Abba | Abba | As mentioned in my selection criteria, no matter how daggy!! Like the Beach Boys pioneers in my eyes. Went on to record so many good songs over the years, catchy pop tunes. Still this was my favourite album, the harmonies on this album were sublime – voice and melody it all just seem to mix. Whilst only a few years old upon this release Abba were another band I went onto appreciate both from an artist and songs perspective. | Bang a Boomerang Rock Me

95 | Pet Sounds | Beach Boys | The first album in my top 100 released before my DOB. You wouldn’t be a music lover without appreciation of the Beach Boys. Certainly, pioneers in my eyes and certainly a uniqueness about them, they took the synthesiser to another level not to mention all the different instrument sounds produced by back tracking from being one of the first artists to mix when recording. In 63 and 64 they released 3 albums a year – no wonder Wilson ended up like he did and you wouldn’t see any of today’s artists doing the same, huge respect. |
Wouldn’t it be nice God Only Knows
One of my favourites but overall so many to choose from…. pick of this album
Sloop John B | 1966 |
The Next 95
So, the first 5 are down……four Australian artists which is no surprise given how much I pumped them back in the 80s but in saying this they were simply so much more prolific back then especially chart wise. So many talented Aussie bands back through that era, there no doubt will be more to come……

96 | Bloom | Rufus | Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think a modern band or artist would make it into my top 100. This band were so refreshing and I think in time this album would certainly rise if I was to ever get around to doing another top 100. A very easily listening album, haunting lyrics yet subtle and true matched with an average voice that really takes you somewhere though. Would this album be in my top 100 had I not seem them live? I don’t care they were simply that good and deserve to be in it around good company | Brighter You Were Right Bloom
Must say hard to pick one but I will continue the trend “Until the Sun needs to Rise” followed very closely by Bloom which grew on me over time | Still wet behind the ears

97 | Shine | Kids in the Kitchen | Australia’s answer to I’m guessing at the time of the worlds Duran Duran. The good-looking boy band that could actually play instruments. There was a few of them in the 80’s. Still in my eyes these boys were very talented and yet we were probably left short of what they were really capable of but they still managed to get 2 good albums out before their demise. | Bitter Desire Change in Mood Current Stand
There is no doubt Scott Carne could sing. Change in Mood still to me the most memorable. | 1986 |

98 | Stranger in Town | Bob Sega | Contains one of my all-time favourite songs – Hollywood Nights. Another album where I was far too young to know the complexities of life when it was first released however over the years I gravitated to it and Bob Sega in general a true American singer song writer. Bob could most certainly write a song and it has been interesting watching other artists covering his songs over the years, even Metallica with Turn the Page | Still the Same We got tonight
Hollywood Nights a song about chasing a girl – gave everything up for the girl only to be left heartbroken. The chase, the capture, the heart ache a story within a song. | 1978 |

99 | Bonk | Big Pig | Another Australian band that really didn’t go on to do much afterwards, still it didn’t detract from the fact that it truly was a raw, edgy memorable great album. The voice of Abeyratne was even more powerful than the awesome percussion used throughout the album. | Big Hotel Hungry Town For mine “Breakaway” Quite often a song I’ve played when I’ve needed pumping up | 1988 |

Mars Needs Guitars | Hoodoo Gurus | The second album released from the Hoodoo’s there is just something about Faulkners voice that just says “Australian”. A softer side of Australian rock a great band and a great album – I think they made Hippie fashionable again in the 80’s, I always wanted to get one of the shirts Faulkner wore, also special note of the film clip to Like Wow - Wipeout |
Like Wow – Wipeout, I remember dancing to this song early in highschool but it was the song “Bittersweet” that would go on to be my favourite from the album | 1985
What a year for music that one was |
And it begins Top 100 all time albums
Several weeks back I decided to coherently in my head start my top 100 albums of all time. Whilst some albums have rolled out of my head quite easily during the process I decided to give myself some guidelines, rules. Given this, it has made it a little more difficult especially the one rule that I’m not allowed to choose multiply albums from one artist – within 3 artists I could do 10 albums, therefore only leaving 90.
When you love your music without limitations boundaries must be set……
- Only one album from one artist
- Only one album can be a soundtrack from a movie (over the years there has been so many great songs complied in one movie). Tarintino is great at, in fact in my eyes sometimes the movie is made superior when a bunch of great songs are laid out over the movie, especially when a song hits that perfect scene. Over the years I have found myself finding many obscure artists-songs from movies, who else watches all the credits right to end until the music score comes up? Again, several albums could have been picked as soundtracks
- As great and as wonderful some of them are no “Best Of’s” this was an argument within myself. A greatest hits album is not the true mark or definition of an artist. Many great albums have great B Side releases, to me a true indication of greatness and appreciation……
- No matter how daggy the artist, be true to yourself lol…..this list is not complied on own self popularity
- An album must be picked for more than just one great song – at least 3 to 4
The top 10 – I’m thinking I could sing every song word for word even the oohs and the arhhs on point on cue. If only I could have put the same effort of recital and memory rentention back into my earlier education, I would be a rock scientist. So, without prejudice, without limitations here are my top 100 albums of all time. The 100 albums I would run to save if my house was on fire. The top 100 albums I have turned to so many times in my life on all various occasions the joyous, the sad “The Moments”
