1985 What a year - ACDC RIP Malcom Young

Another 2 greats gone in my absence...

Okay so I am back in to the Top 100, I’ve had a couple of glitches that I’ve had to take care of not to mention moving in to the top 50 takes some time, if I didn’t take my time then I wouldnt hold my music so valuable. During the past Months I’ve been to see some great concerts which has also side tracked me somewhat not to mention the recent deaths of a few maestro’s who I hold in high regard. There is something unfortunate when this happens I can’t help but go right through their back catalogue. Tom Petty I didn’t really grab a hold of until my later years but wow I really dug him and to know he was barely into his 60’s really is quite sad.

Malcom Young was just a tragic story and man was he a talent and though I have well and truly moved on from their music it wasn’t really until I started listening to ACDC’s back catalogue recently that I found myself singing their songs word for word confirming there was once upon a time that they were my kings. From about the age of 15 I gravitated to them, had all their tapes and I am pretty sure for the next couple of years I smashed them, I must of to know so many songs that I had forgotten all about. This is to not say I don’t appreciate them now how can you not I guess I just moved on. If I am to be a little honest here I was more of a Bon Scott fan and their much earlier stuff and perhaps because not much of the earlier stuff received much airplay until recently your music recall memory fades – but hey when a certain riff starts it doesn’t take long for your memory to take you back and I often wonder had my memory recall been as good with text books like it is with music I would be a presiding judge or a brain surgeon by now. Though I was a Scott fan I did like Johnson especially on Fly on the Wall “Shake Your Foundation” and “Sink the Pink” kind of drew them back to me. But it has truly taken all these years after revisiting their music to come to realise just how good Malcom Young was, okay he wasn’t the entertainer like Angus was, but I would have to say, and this is a big call probably the greatest rhythm riff guitarist there ever was. Ironically it was hearing radio interviews of Petty when he passed away where he was talking about “Running Down a Dream” (one of my favourites) He said that The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeplin and the Rolling Stones had just about used and invented every great guitar riff that is almost the bases of all music today so when he his guitarists came up with the riff for this song he knew he was on to something. Then enter ACDC okay not everyone’s cup of tea but whether you appreciate them or not you would be hard pressed night to find yourself tapping away to some of the riffs Young produced. I was also lucky to see this band live on several occasions and each time they brought with them a great show.

After the hard last 18 Months that have been – Prince, Bowie, Bennigton, Cornell, Petty and now Young there is one mean band forming somewhere. RIP Malcom and Tom and thank you for some great music….

Unbelievable

10th of October 2017

Six Months in anticipation (not really totally forgot about it) and then bang two days prior I was like a little kid waiting to blow out his candles – bring on the presents. I loved her in Yazoo and I loved all her solo material and I have to say she didn’t disappoint in fact she was way better than what I had anticipated. Sure, I had managed to what turned out to be front row centre of stage tickets, but it was a performance I would have enjoyed sitting way up the back – mmm maybe I am kidding myself. There is just something about being able to see every facial expression of a singer selling and telling their story in a live performance, she totally captivated me. She left me feeling mesmerized so much so that I teared up – not happy or sad tears just tears of absolute resignation of just how good this lady is. Yes of course she is a seasoned campaigner but not since Sinead O’Connor a few years back now or Cyndi Lauper’s Last Night tour have I felt so much love and emotion for music. I didn’t think I could ever top the feeling O’Connor’s acapella version of “Nothing Compares to You” but she managed to do it not just once but on several occasions. Probably the best Solo performance I have ever seen, witnessed or heard. I thought I would purposely not write about it until a couple of weeks later as to not be overruled by the emotions, but I have to say I still feel the same. I will try and track down a live performance of the night and upload if I can – you be the judge. Alison Moyet, thank you....
