"Triple J top 100"
Well it is that time of year again, have to say one of the highlights of my years the “Triple J Top 100” a day I celebrate and look forward to every year. This year being the first not on Australia Day which I find a little unsettling but at the same time I can see reasoning behind, so I guess I’m a fence sitter on the idea. Over the past years celebrating Australia Day and doing all things Australian go hand in hand whilst having the Top 100 playing in the background. Then comes the anticipated wait of what will be number 1 which I have to say most times I am well and truly intoxicated by then not only by the music but alcohol. The plus side of moving the day is not having to draw myself out of bed the next morning to go to work with a massive hangover.
Triple J have done so much for the Australian music scene over the past couple of decades by drawing some of the now biggest selling Australian artists out of obscurity by testing the waters before you hear them on commercial radio. I could rattle off so many artists that without the help and airplay by Triple J they would still be playing in back rooms in the pubs and clubs around Australia. From Silverchair, Powderfinger and the like, to name a few I would hate to think the imbalance of overseas versus Australian music on commercial radio without them.
Most Australian bands-artists these days have received their upstart from either the old double J or of course the big sister triple J. I thought lasts year top 100 was very strong to the previous 2-3 years but after recently voting this year this year heralds to be one of the best this decade. This year I have a little soft spot for a band that have been around for a long time “Gangs of Youths” who have had great commercial success with their new album “Go Farther in Lightness” their second in total. I am praying to the music gods that they can finish the year with the number 1 triple J song which in my opinion is a more prestigious award than the Aria awards they recently collected.
So here are my top 10 songs that I submitted in no order except of course my choice for number 1……. good luck to all of them, most have been around for a while and deserve all the accolades that they may receive. There is only one thing I like about getting old these days and that is the fact that my vote may imbalance the presumptuous youth of today.
